Opening Reception & Artists Talk: Thursday May 5, 7 pm – 9 pm Exhibition: April 30 – May 14

art / work is a location-specific sound installation whose subject is artists as workers. The artist Benjamin McCarthy merges documentary and formal experimentation with sound and technology, to produce a composition the sole source
material of which is his recorded conversations with artists from Toronto’s broader arts scene. The project takes as its source material the experience of underrepresented and working artists in their own words. Beyond experimenting with music, dialogical improvisation, the human voice, and discarded and repurposed technology, it’s also an exploration of the ability of simple self-narrativization and self-sharing to create vivid pictures of real folks in an attempt to foster community-engagement and empathy.
