LAUNCH of TORONTO SOUND ARTIST SERIES with the CEC - FREE May 22, 9:30am - 5pm @ the NAISA Space Note: very limited space, must pre-register A day-long listening session devoted to the submissions of the 2008 JTTP (Jeu de Temps / Times Play). The sessions will run in (about) 90 minute blocks with time for coffee and conversation between sessions. This is an opportunity in a quiet, informal setting to listen to new work from the emerging community of Canadian sound artists. Odradek (Jim Bailey, Michelangelo Iaffaldano & Andy Yue) will be performing interventions on May 25th during the CNMN conference. Using simple software, we will explore the effect of layering text and various sound sources, consider relationships between the audible, the visible, and how to integrate these layers in performance. Recordings should be under two minutes in length. We will upload your recording onto a sound map of Mississauga to be presented at the Mississauga Civic Centre and on the City of Mississauga website in 2008. Check out how it looks so far!! Mississauga Sound Map ================ 4) NAISA YOUTH INITIATIVE The NAISA youth education initiative will include the creation of new sound art works by youth through collaboration as an outcome to a series of workshops that teach an understanding of basic sound art, electronics, improvisation and composition. Hands-on workshops will include assembling an electroacoustic instrument (the NAISAtron created by Rob Cruickshank), creating sound art and finally the exploration of sound in space. This initiative is targeted toward youth at high schools, arts centers and community centers. If you are between the ages of of 20 and 25 and are interested in working with youth OR If you are a teacher or run a community centre and are interested in being a part of this youth initiative, please contact Nadene at naisa@naisa.ca. NAISA artists Darsha Hewitt and Darren Copeland participated in a March residency at L'école secondaire Des Lauriers organized by MASC in Ottawa as part of Symposium For Young Artists. An exhibition of the student's works was shown at AxeNeo7, 80, rue Hanson, Gatineau, Quebec on April 11th & 12th, 2008. NAISA gratefully acknowledges the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario and the Laidlaw Foundation for their financial support of this NAISA youth initiative. ================ 5) SOUND TRAVELS FESTIVAL OF SOUND ART 2008 June 1 - October 1, 2008 It's our 10th anniversary!! Sound Travels brings sound art to the outdoors on Toronto Island in a way that entices the curious and provides a unique experience each and every year. Resident artists include Robert Normandeau, David Ogborn and Ellen Waterman. Other artists include Chantal Dumas, Barry Prophet, Robert Mulder/Kristi Allik, the team of Jennifer Schmidt, Colin Asquith and Terry Nauheim, Sarah Peebles, Stefan & Laura Rose and Jørgen Teller. Installations will be open throughout the summer, performances are scheduled for July 25th, August 8th, 9th and 10th at St. Andrew by-the-Lake church. The 2nd annual Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium will be August 7-8. Stay tuned for more info in an upcoming NAISA Sound Channel for special events related to our 10th anniversary of this Sound Travels festival. ================ 6) SOUNDplay FESTIVAL 2008 October 1 - 26, 2008 Performance weekend October 22-26, the Theatre Centre SOUNDplay is a meeting point for experimentation in new media and sound art pushing the boundaries and encouraging new fusions of image, sound and text. SOUNDplay 2008 includes multi-media performances, installations, workshops and videomusic screenings.
