Recline in an alternate sounding universe in 50's style hair salon chairs transformed into radio art listening lounges. Running for the entire month of May, the Radio Art Salon includes a program of radio art works curated by Darren Copeland that includes contributions from Resonance FM in the UK, from Kunstradio in Austria (sponsored by the Austria Cultural Forum) and content drawn from the Deep Wireless international call for submissions on the theme of Trans-X.
Radio Roam is a radio transmission installation work. It uses many radios installed in the gallery space, each tuned to a different frequency on the FM dial. A variable transmitter sends out an audio signal and automatically changes the broadcasting frequency based on motion activity within the space. The audio signal "jumps" from one radio to another, creating a surround sound experience for the gallery visitor. It is intended that the transmitted audio blend with the bleed from other high power FM stations, to create an ever changing collage of radio sounds, in real time.

Eleanor King Eleanor King works with site-specific installation incorporating elements of audio, video, photography and sculpture. Eleanor often uses radio as a medium for audio performance, she hosts a regular radio program on CKDU 97.5 FM in Halifax. Her work incorporates humorous elements to critique social behaviors, investigating consumer and tourist cultures.
Stephen Kelly Stephen Kelly works with sound sculpture and site-specific audio installation and do-it-yourself electronics. Interested in intersections between audio art and music he creates kinetic, viewer responsive audio exhibitions and has built several unique musical instruments. Stephen has recorded, produced, and released over 14 musical albums on his independent label Dead Bum.

The Uduk tribe of Sudan believes that much can be divined from the trees. The trees act as a sort of psychic conduit, absorbing information by listening in on what goes on in the village. Only tribal elders trained in the art of divination can retrieve this information from the trees, learning village secrets.
In similar fashion, "The Whispering Tree" absorbs the sound around it, and then retransmits those sounds. However, the tree is no tattle-tale. Secrets told to the tree become part of a continuous soundscape emited by the tree, but the secrets are veiled and mixed together. Over time, the tree beomes a wise old repository of all that has happened around it, containing and sometimes revealing all that it has learned.
Feel free to tell the tree your secrets, or practice the art of divination on the secrets the tree already knows.

Lori Beckstead Lori Beckstead is a professor in the School of Radio & Television Arts at Ryerson University in Toronto, teaching radio, audio and digital media. She spent ten years as a community radio broadcaster and has done freelance work for the CBC producing and reporting for radio and the web. She recently completed studies at the University of Technology, Sydney (Australia) where she found a new interest in interactive art that incorporates and highlights sound as the central focus.
Robert C. F. Mulder was born in The Hague, Holland in the last century. After much probing he will admit to being an independent interdisciplinary artist with a passion for the real-time interaction of light, sound and imagination. This passion has resulted in a long exploratory path of discovery in the domain of live media arts ˜ the integration of visuals, music, and drama ˜ in performance utilizing new means.
He was (and still is) inspired by the interdisciplinary ideas/works of Le Corbusier & Edgar Varèse, Louis-Bertrant Castel, Thomas Wilfred, Bulat Galeyev, and Leon Theremin. Among his major commissions are new media and integrated arts commissions for the Canada Pavilion of Expo 1986, Ars Electronica Festival, (Austria 1992), the Berlin Music Biennale (Germany,1997), and New Music Concerts (1992 & 2000). He has won awards/prizes from the Bourges Electroacoustic Music Competition and Prix Ars Electronica. His works have been staged, screened or exhibited in Brazil, Canada, Europe, Estonia, USA, and Russia.

I. "Lines" by Stephanie Loveless
In this meditative audio-visual piece, hand-processed Super-8 images and a single piano phrase are slowly repeated -- stretched and abstracted by processes of re-photography, re-phonography and digital manipulation. Structural elements of minimalism offer tension to the nostalgia of the content explored. Images and sounds are evocative in their associations and melodies, but do not operate on the level of traditional narrative, development, or climax.

III. "Black Planet" by James Webb, Matthew Kalil & Jurie Senekal
The interplay of the “puppeteer’s” hands and the wax construct a time-based sculpture; the dynamics of the sound and image create a tension that forces itself onto the viewer/participator; and the relationship of the colours: all hold political, magickal (sic) and artistic significance. This artwork operates on many levels, asking questions about history, identity and socio-political cultural consequences.

VI. "Sustentation" by François Handfield
The sustentation is the equilibrium of the forces that allow an aircraft to compensate for gravity forces from the earth. Here, I invite you to roam through several sustentation states within a landscape.

VII. "Moirures" by Inés Wickmann (Video) & Francis Dhomont (from Les moirures du temps) (Music)
In Moirures (Shimmers), the images do nothing but reveal the music, in the way of a score of shapes, textures and colors. The origin of these abstract images comes from reflections on water and panes in permanent vibration. Third Place winner in the Eastman Computer Music Center twenty fifth anniversary electroacoustic music competition. Rochester, NY, USA.

VIII. "Genèse et Début D'une Décadence" by François Girouard
Genèse et Début d'une Décadence (Genesis and Beginning of Decline) is in hommage to the visual artist Ginette Déziel. This video-music piece examines speed, information saturation and nothingness. From the beginning of creation until today, the means of encoding and storing information are refined, improved, and the result of this progression can be only the search of balance towards nothingness.

X. "Sound Object" by Louis Dufort
This video-music piece is the first which uses my granular audio/vidéo tool , the "grainKrusher". Presented in an art gallery this installaltion is halfway between the visual and sound arts. This first attempt will give place to a possible continuation where inanimate objects a priori undergo, by way of granular jolt, movement thus creating their own sound frame. Sound Object was created on July 13, 2003 during Champs électriques festival at the SAW Gallery (Ottawa).

Une Suite de Temps-Morts presents a series of sound works and photographs in an installation format. Based on complimentary pairing of manipulated field recordings and long exposure pinhole photographs, Une Suite de temps-Morts exhibits its sometimes eerily meditative sometimes slightly irritant sounds over a 5 channels playback system and the images are displayed over blank music sheets layed out on music stands. The music is an abstraction of the soundscape recorded during the picture taking process. Rather then a scrutinizing approach revealing the elements that form a complex audio panorama, the sound compositions seek to blur these elements and achieve an amorphous whole. As the expression temps-morts (that I find best translated as idle time) used in the title suggest, the music evokes a bit of a stand-still, not meant to be captivating or even able to retain one’s attention, but conducing to a distracted, even contemplative listening.
The music parallels and complements the pinhole photographs. The pinhole used to let a small amount of light alter a photographic emulsion requires anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour of exposure time. This enables only static objects to become identifiable on the photographs. And because of their stillness, these objects produced no sound. This archaic image-taking process is a time-base practice that shares with field recording the need to be idle for a while in order to present an incomplete portrait. Une Suite de temps-Morts aims to share this process of time-compression, incompleteness and drifting with a subtle aural spectacle.

Jean Routhier Jean Routhier has an audio leaning art production. Routhier is an audio wrapper, his approach similar to a store clerk, bagging everything into their sonic essence. Interested in the gaps and gasps in sounds conducive to the transmission of tales he sometimes hears in the ether, Routhier finds inspiration in everyday situations.
His work has been presented internationally and nationally at the Silence Festival (Vancouver, BC), ISEA 2006 (San José, CA, USA), Overgarden Festival (Denmark), DLux Media Arts Festival (Melbourne, Australia), Global Mix Festival (Cracow, Poland), Signal & Noise Festival (Vancouver, BC), 1994 ICMC (International Computer Music Conference, Florida, USA) La Panderia (Mexico City), École des beaux-arts (Aix-en-Provence, France), Studio Cormier (Montréal, QC), Artspace Gallery (Peterborough, ON) Helen Pitt Gallery (Vancouver, BC), Articule (Montréal, QC), Kuntsradio (Austria), CBC and Radio-Canada (Canada), and at the Upgrade 2.0, during New Forms Festival (Vancouver, BC).
