Transmissions sans Frontières is a two-day conference sponsored by The Canadian Society for Independent Radio Production (CSIRP) with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Immediately following the International Features Conference in Toronto, it will offer attendees an opportunity to explore radio with some of the finest in Canadian, European, and American radio producers.

Presenters include: Peter Leonhard Braun, Garvia Bailey; Victoria Fenner, Anna Friz, Christos Hatzis, Kari Hesthamar, Julie Shapiro, Laurence Stevenson, Steve Wadhams, Gregory Whitehead, and Barb Woolner.

Transmissions sans Frontières is about transcending boundaries -- boundaries between art forms, boundaries between countries, boundaries between public and community broadcasting. It will encourage us to think of the airspace we all share, and how we can make the airwaves resonate with new voices and new ways of presenting ideas.

CSIRP was founded to serve the needs of Canadian radio producers in all sectors - community radio, public radio, and commercial radio. They host workshops, sponsor projects, and distribute a regular newsletter. Since their launch they have presented the Full Moon Audio Art Camp each year, the Creative Radio Initiative, now in its second year, and have produced two volumes of Radiant Dissonance, a radio series by Canadian audio artists which is heard on more than fifty stations in Canada and abroad.
The Singing Maze SOUNDwalk/performance
By Kathy Kennedy
August 9, 2003, 12:30 pm
Centre Island meet at the Pavilion, Island-side
FREE
Performance/sound artist Kathy Kennedy will invite participants gathered at the Pavillion on Centre Island to follow her sounds and enter into the Singing Maze, a sonic treasure hunt. The answers to questions lie in the trees and in the water. Birds give messages that only the most attentive listeners can decipher. A special guided tour of the Sign Waves installation series will follow this performance at 1:30 pm
Kathy Kennedy is a sound artist with a background in classical singing. Her art practise generally involves the voice and issues of interface with technology, often using telephony or radio. She is also involved in community art, and is a founder of the digital media center for women in Canada, Studio XX, as well as the innovative choral group for women Choeur Maha. Her large scale sonic installation/performances for up to 100 singers and radio, called "sonic choreographies," have been performed internationally including the inauguration of the Vancouver New Public Library and at the Lincoln Center's Out of Doors Series. Her solo performances include a high level of improvisation over lush soundtracks of painstakingly mixed vocals and other sounds to create an immersive world of different voices.
