Maker Workshop: Paint Your Own Sound Player
By Jane Tingley and Darren Copeland
January 19 – 20, 2019
NAISA North Media Arts Centre, 106 Ottawa Ave, South River, Canada.
$95 (2 days), $55 (1 day). Register Here.

Learn how to build an interactive electronic sound device using The Touch Board and conductive Electric Paint. Explore sound interactivity with the Touch Board by using it to play and modify outdoor winter recordings made during the workshop in the beautiful Almaguin Highlands.

On Saturday Jan 19 (10 am – 4 pm) Jane Tingley will demonstrate and assist participants with constructing a customized Touch Board. The Touch Board made by Bare Conductive in the UK turns any surface, object or space into a sensor for triggering audio recordings by drawing and painting your original interactive surface design with conductive electric paint.

On Sunday Jan 20 (10 am – 4 pm) NAISA Artistic Director Darren Copeland will lead a winter 'sounding' walk exploring the village soundscape for distinctive winter sounds. Following that he will teach methods for editing and cleaning field recordings and help participants use the Touch Board to play and manipulate the recordings in an interactive way.

In all, a fun weekend of interactive learning to highlight NAISA's Art's Birthday celebrations.

Touch boards will be provided for shared usage. If participants wish to use their own Touch Board they can be ordered from here. Sound Recorders and some laptops are available for use, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. Sound Editing will be taught using Reaper software which has a free and unlimited evaluation period.

Jane Tingley's projects have included wearable robotics, gestural games, and with anyWare, an Internet of Things inspired distributed sculpture. Her interdisciplinary work draws on expertise from multiple disciplines in an effort to create aesthetic experiences that push the boundaries of interactivity and playfulness. Artists and enthusiasts of all types that are curious about incorporating media elements into their work, business or play are encouraged to take this workshop.
